Trend Micro Security keeps detecting files or programs that are already added to the Exception List

This article provides instructions on how to add files in Trend Micro Security software's White List. This is applicable when the Trend Micro Security program detected a valid file as malicious or when a file is not properly added to Trend Micro Security software's Exception List.


Editing your computer's registry can cause serious errors on your computer. Always create a backup before making any changes. If you need assistance, you can view the Help file by clicking Help > Help Topics on the Registry Editor window. You can also contact Trend Micro Technical Support.

We recommend that you print out this document or bookmark this page before proceeding because you will be asked to restart your computer during the procedure.

To add files or programs to Trend Micro Security program's White List, follow the steps below:

  1. Right-click the Trend Micro  system tray icon, then select Exit to close your Trend Micro Security program.
  2. Open the Registry Editor. Do the following:
    1. On your keyboard, press the Windows Windows Key + R keys. The Run window will appear.
    2. In the Open field, type "regedit" then press ENTER. This will open the Registry Editor window.
  3. Rename the Osprey entry to Osprey1. To do this, follow the steps below:
    1. Go to the following registry hive: 
    2. Right-click the Osprey folder, then select Rename.
    3. Type  "Osprey1", then close the Registry Editor.
  4. Open your Trend Micro Security program.
    This will create a new Osprey folder in the registry and will update the Osprey settings.
  5. Right-click the Trend Micro  system tray icon, then select  Exit  to close your Trend Micro security program.
  6. Open the Registry Editor. Repeat STEP 2.
  7. Add the detected application's executable file in Osprey's Whitelist. Do the following:
    1. Go to the following registry hive: 
    2. Right-click the White List folder.
    3. Select New, then select Key.
    4. Rename the folder to the application's name, then press ENTER.
    5. Click the newly created folder.
    6. Right-click the right pane, then select New "String" Value.
    7. Rename the String Value to ProcessImageName, then press ENTER.
    8. Double-click the created string value, then type the executable file (ending in .exe) on the Value Data field.
    9. Close the Registry Editor, then restart your computer.
  8. Perform a scan using Trend Micro security program. The added file should no longer be detected.
