Problem Description

You get the following notification message from your Trend Micro Titanium program:
Protection Outdated
"Protection Outdated. You must connect to the Internet to maintain your protection. After connecting this computer to the Internet. Click Verify."

Solution

To resolve the issue, do the following:
[ Expand All ]

STEP 1: Check the Internet connection

Trend Micro wants to ensure you have access to the latest protection all the time. This notification will appear if the program detects that it has not connected to the Trend Micro server for 3 days. Whenever you get this notification, simply connect to the Internet, then update your program. The protection status will change to "Protected".
Note: There is no need to click on anything. Once it connects to the server, it will automatically acquire the latest protection. You can disconnect from the Internet after the program is finished.

STEP 2: Check for conflicting software

You will get the error message "Unable to install the update. Please try again later." when trying to update Trend Micro Titanium if there is a corrupted update file or conflicting software on your computer.
To resolve this issue, follow the troubleshooting steps in this Knowledge Base article: “Unable to install the update. Please try again later” error message appears when clicking the About link in Trend Micro Titanium.

STEP 3: Check the Download over metered connection settings (for Windows 8)

It is possible that your Trend Micro is unable to update due to internet connection being restricted by this feature of Windows 8. If you have an unlimited internet connection, we recommend that you turn this feature off. If you are on metered connection (meaning, you pay for each kilobyte of data), you may temporarily turn this feature off then perform a manual update on your Trend Micro program. You may check this Knowledge Base article on how to perform a manual update: Manually downloading program updates for Titanium.
To turn off Download over metered connection settings, follow the steps below:
  1. On your keyboard, press Windows Windows Key key + C to go to the Charms Bar.
  2. Choose Settings, then select Change PC Settings.
  3. Go to Devices and turn-on the Download over metered connections.
    Download over metered connections
Note: For more details about the metered connections and how it affects your computer, check this Microsoft article: Metered Internet connections (FAQ).

STEP 4: Check for virus infection

Your computer may be infected by viruses that block your connection to the server. If you continue to get the notification, run Housecall.

STEP 5: Install a hot fix for Titanium 2014 version

To install the hot fix, follow the steps below:
  1. Log onto the computer using an account with administrator privileges.
Note: If you have installed a software on the computer before, then you probably have these privileges.
  2. Go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\AMSP\update\iau_sdk\iau.dll and check if any of the files below is missing:
For 32-bit operating system, look for the following files:
