Problem Description This article explains the use of the Web Reputation Service and the access level that a client utilizes when accessing a URL. Solution 1. What is Web Reputation Service? 2. What are the levels that determine if an access to a URL will be blocked or allowed? What is Web Reputation Service? Web Reputation Service is one of OfficeScan's new features, which is capable of detecting and blocking Web-based security risks, including phishing attacks. You can configure it by logging on to the management console and going to Networked Computers > Web Reputation > Policies. You have the option to configure the Internal and External User Policies. What are the levels that determine if an access to a URL will be blocked or allowed? Here are the levels that you can configure in the External Computers tab of the Web Reputation Policies page in the management console: • High : Blocks URLs that are unrated, a Web threat, very likely to be a Web threat, or likely to be a Web threat • Medium : Blocks URLs that are unrated, a Web threat, or very likely to be a Web threat • Medium-Low : Blocks URLs that are a Web threat or very likely to be a Web threat • Low : Blocks only URLs that are a Web threat Note: Remember that as you set the security level higher, the Web threat detection rate improves but the possibility of false positives also increases. Important: In OfficeScan 8.0 SP1, there are only three (3) categories for the web reputation: • High : blocks a greater number of web threats but increases the risk of false positives • Medium : blocks most web threats while keeping the false positive count low • Low : blocks fewer web threats but reduces the risk of false positives We maintain an online web URL rating database that the OfficeScan client queries. Once it is enabled for HTTP URL, OfficeScan will give a rating of the website.
