Using the Trend Micro Vault feature of your Trend Micro Security software

Learn how to use the Trend Micro Vault feature of your Trend Micro Maximum Security program to safeguard your sensitive files.

What is Trend Micro Vault?
The Trend Micro Vault helps keep your sensitive files secure. With it, you can do the following:
  • Easily block casual access to files in the vault.
  • Seal the vault completely if your computer is lost or stolen.
Important: If your computer is lost or stolen, do either of the following:

 

  • Use the Report Stolen service to seal the vault immediately
    Reporting a loss or stolen computer

     

  • Use your Trend Micro account to seal the vault
    1. Go to your Trend Micro Account, and then click Report Stolen.
    2. Provide your email address and password.
Your Trend Micro Vault regularly checks if you have reported your computer as stolen or missing. If it receives your report, it will automatically block all access to the files inside your vault. Even the correct password will not be able to open it.

Using the Trend Micro Vault in Trend Micro Security 2015, 2016 and 2017
  1. Open the main console of your Maximum Security. Do either of the following:
    • Double-click the Trend Micro icon on your desktop.
    • Double-click the Trend Micro system tray icon.

     

  2. Click the Data tab.
    Click Data

     

  3. Click Configure button for the Trend Micro Vault to set up the feature.
    Click Configure
    2015 and 2016 Version

     

    Click Configure
    2017 Version

     

  4. Click OK in the introductory window.
    Note: Tick don’t show this introduction again before clicking OK if you do not want to see the window again.

  5. Fill out the following fields:
    • Password
    • Confirm Password
    • Password hint
    • Email
  6. Click Create.
    Click Create

     

    Your Trend Micro Vault will be initiated and you will see a confirmation window once it is done.

    Note: The Select a Password window will appear only if you have not yet set a password for your Maximum Security program features. This password will also protect the following features:
    • Parental Controls
    • Data Theft Prevention

  7. Drag your important files to the Trend Micro Vault icon on your desktop to protect them.

    Notes:
    • Dragging a file or folder into the vault will move it there instead of just copying it. This will happen even if you hold down CTRL when dragging the file.
    • To lock or unlock the vault, right click the icon on your desktop, and then select either Unlock Vault or Lock Vault.


Locking Trend Micro Vault when computer is lost or stolen
If your computer is lost or stolen, you can immediately seal the Trend Micro Vault through the Report Stolen service on your Trend Micro Account. To do this, follow the steps below:
  1. Go to Trend Micro Account.
  2. Click the Report Stolen link.

    The Report Stolen window will appear.

  3. Provide your email address and password, then click Report.
    Note: Your Trend Micro Vault regularly checks if you have reported your computer as stolen or missing. If it receives your report, it will automatically block all access to the files inside the vault. Even the correct password will not be able to open it. The vault will remain inaccessible until you report your computer found.


Unlocking Trend Micro Vault when computer is recovered
If you have recovered your lost computer, you need to unseal the Trend Micro Vault to restore your access to the vault. To do this, report the computer as found by following the steps below:
  1. Go to Trend Micro Account.
  2. Click the Report Stolen link.

  3. Click Report Found.

  4. Provide your email address and password.
  5. Click the Report button.

Recover files from the old version of Trend Micro Vault
This article shows you what to do with the old version of your Trend Micro Vault before upgrading to the latest version. It also has instructions on how to recover the files from the previous versions of your Vault after the upgrade.
  1. Back up your files before upgrading to the latest version of your Trend Micro Vault.
    1. Right-click the vault, then select Unlock Vault to unseal it.
    2. Back-up all the files on your Trend Micro Vault.
    3. Upgrade your Titanium Maximum Security program.
  2. Recover the files in your Trend Micro Vault after upgrading to the latest version.
    1. Double-click the Trend Micro desktop icon or the system tray icon to open the main console of your Titanium Maximum Security.
    2. Click Tools.
    3. Click the Trend Micro Vault icon.
    4. Click Yes when you receive the following message: "Would you like to move files currently stored in an older version of the Trend Micro Vault to the new one?"

    5. Type the following on the fields provided, then click OK:
      • The password from the previous version of your Trend Micro Vault.
      • The password of the new version of your Trend Micro Vault.

    6. Your Trend Micro Vault will set up.

    7. Click OK.

    8. Your Trend Micro Vault is enabled.

Unable to open the Trend Micro Vault
To resolve this issue, use your Titanium Settings password to open the Trend Micro vault. This is applicable for users who set up their Titanium programs according to the scenarios below:
Scenario 1: Upgraded from Trend Micro Internet Security Pro 2010 while your Trend Micro Vault is turned on
    1. You upgraded to Titanium from Trend Micro Internet Security Pro 2010 while Trend Micro Vault is enabled with Password 1.
    2. You turned on your Titanium program's Trend Micro Vault with Password 1.
    3. You changed your password to a new one (Password 2). You use Password 1 to open the Trend Micro Vault, while you use Password 2 to access your Titanium Settings and other features.
    4. You will need to use Password 2 to open Trend Micro Vault after the latest update.
Scenario 2: Installed your Titanium program and changed the password
    1. You installed Titanium on your computer.
    2. You turned on the Trend Micro Vault with Password 1 before you set your Settings password for Parental Controls or Data Theft Protection.
    3. You changed your password to a new one (Password 2). You use Password 1 to open the Trend Micro Vault, while you use Password 2 to access your Titanium Settings and other features.
    4. You will need to use Password 2 to open Trend Micro Vault after the latest update.
