Learn how to remove persistent threats using the Rescue Disk feature of your Trend Micro software.


The Trend Micro Rescue Disk allows you to use a hard disk, CD, DVD, or USB drive to examine your computer without launching your Windows operating system. It finds and removes persistent or difficult-to-clean security threats that can lurk deep within your operating system.

BEFORE YOU PROCEED:

  • We recommend that you print out this page or watch a video tutorial before proceeding because you will be asked to restart your computer during the procedure.
  • To run this tool using a USB drive, you will need an empty USB drive (128MB or larger). Any content that is saved on the USB will be erased during the process.
  • USB 3.0 is not supported in Rescue Disk.
  • Hard disk mode is not supported in UEFI boot mode.
Set Your Computer's Boot Mode to Boot from CDROM or USB

Note: Making a mistake when changing the BIOS settings could make your computer unusable. Trend Micro cannot take responsibility for fixing any problems that result from editing the BIOS settings. For more information, visit our Legal Notice page.

To set your computer's Boot Mode to boot from CDROM or USB, do the following:

  1. Switch your computer to Setup Mode:
    1. Turn the computer off completely.
    2. Turn the computer back on again.
    3. As the computer starts, press the Delete or Del key on your keyboard. If that does not work, try any of the following keyboard keys:
      • F2
      • F10
      • Escape or Esc
  2. When the blue window appears, use the arrow keys on your keyboard to find Advanced BIOS.
  3. Change First Boot Device to CDROM or USB.
  4. On your keyboard, press the F10 key to save the settings.
  5. Restart your computer normally.
Download and Run Rescue Disk Tool

To download and run the Rescue Disk Tool, do the following:

  1. After restarting the computer, download the Rescue Disk tool and save it to your desktop. Do any of the following:
    OPTION 2: Download Rescue Disk from Trend Micro Diagnostic Toolkit
  2. Double-click the downloaded file to run it.
  3. Read and accept the license agreement, then click Next.

  4. Select the type of Rescue Disk you want to create.

  5. Click Create.

    Click Create

  6. Click Create Now.
    Wait as it copies files to your USB device or CD/DVD.
  7. When prompted to restart, click Restart Now.
    On restart, you will see the Trend Micro Rescue Disk blue window.
  8. Select Remove Threats.
    Wait as the tool finishes removing the threats.
  9. Once done, remove the USB device or CD/DVD and press the ENTER key on your keyboard to restart the machine normally.
  10. Run another scan using your Trend Micro Security.
Revert Computer's Boot Mode

To revert the computer's Boot Mode, do the following:

  1. Switch your computer to Setup Mode:
    1. Turn the computer off completely.
    2. Turn the computer back on again.
  2. As the computer starts, press the Delete or Del key on your keyboard. If that does not work, try any of the following keyboard keys:
    • F2
    • F10
    • Escape or Esc
  3. When the blue window appears, use the arrow keys on your keyboard to find Advanced BIOS.
  4. Revert First Boot Device to previous settings.
  5. On your keyboard, press the F10 key to save the settings.
  6. Restart the computer normally.
