“Starting your protection” appears from the Trend Micro program

You get the following message when you point your mouse over the Trend Micro icon in your system tray:
“Starting your protection”
You also cannot do the following:
  • Open the program’s main console
  • Go online after installing your Trend Micro program
We recommend that you print out this document or bookmark this page before proceeding because you will be asked to restart your computer during the procedure.

 

To resolve this issue, choose either of the options below:

OPTION 1: Upgrade Trend Micro Security to the latest version
To upgrade your program, do the following:

  1. Download the installer file to begin the installation.

     

    For serial number starting with X
    For serial number starting with P
    For serial number starting with A

    Note: If your serial number starts with "T", contact Best Buy or your Internet Service Provider, depending on where you got the product.

  2. Double-click the installer to run it.
    Click Yes when the User Account Control window appears.
  3. Wait for the installer to extract the files needed for the installation.
  4. Click Yes when asked to remove the old program version.

  5. Click Restart Now when prompted to restart your computer.

    After restarting, the installation will resume and will prompt for your serial number.
  6. Type your serial number, then click Next.

    Notes:

  7. Read the License Agreement, then click Agree and Install.

  8. Wait for the program to install. This may take a couple of minutes.
    Installation

     

  9. Click Finish.
    You will see the main console of your Trend Micro Security program.

OPTION 2: Reinstall your current Trend Micro Security program version
To reinstall your program, do the following:

 

  1. Open the Trend Micro Diagnostic Toolkit. Do either of the following:
    • For Windows 10:
      1. Click Start > All Apps > Trend Micro Security > Trend Micro Diagnostic Toolkit.

         

    • For Windows 8:
      1. On your keyboard, press the Windows Windows Key + C to open Charms bar.
      2. Click Search.
      3. On the Search box, type "Trend".
      4. Click Trend Micro Diagnostic Toolkit.

         

    • For Windows Vista and 7:
      1. Go to Start > All Programs Trend Micro Titanium (version) > More Tools and Help.
      2. Click Trend Micro Diagnostic Toolkit.

         

    Click Yes when the User Account Control window appears.

     

  2. Click the (C) Uninstall tab.
  3. Click 1. Uninstall Software.
    Note: You may disregard the Windows notification saying to use the Control Panel to remove the program, since the Trend Micro Diagnostic Toolkit will remove all Trend Micro related files from your computer which the Control Panel might have missed.

  4. Click Yes when asked to confirm the uninstallation.
  5. Copy your serial number.
  6. Tick I copied my serial number, then click Uninstall.
  7. Click Yes when asked to restart your computer.
  8. Download the installer file to begin the installation.

     

    For Trend Micro Security 2017 version
    For serial number starting with X
    For serial number starting with P
    For serial number starting with A

     

    For Trend Micro Security 10 (2016) version
    For serial number starting with X
    For serial number starting with P
    For serial number starting with A

     

    For Trend Micro Security 2015 version
    For serial number starting with X
    For serial number starting with P
    For serial number starting with A

     

    For Trend Micro Security 2014 version
    For serial number starting with X
    For serial number starting with P
    For serial number starting with A

    Note: If your serial number starts with "T", contact Best Buy or your Internet Service Provider, depending on where you got the product.

  9. Double-click the installer to run it.
    Click Yes when the User Account Control window appears.
  10. Wait for the installer to extract the files needed for the installation.
  11. Wait as Trend Micro checks if your computer is compatible for installation.
  12. Type your serial number, then click Next.

  13. Read the License Agreement, then click Agree and Install.
  14. Wait for the program to install. This may take a couple of minutes.
  15. Click Finish.
    You will see the main console of your Trend Micro Security program.

 

Note for Windows XP Users:
On April 8th, 2014, Microsoft formally announced the Windows XP end of support. Because Microsoft no longer fixes issues on Windows XP, it has become increasingly difficult for Trend Micro to keep users safe on this operating system. While our internet security products can be installed on Windows XP, we encourage all of our users to upgrade their PCs to a more modern operating system which will provide greater stability and security.
