Problem Description

This article shows you how to create a Hijackthis log which you can use to help you check for malicious software in your computer.

Solution

HijackThis is a free tool that quickly scans your computer to find settings that may have been changed by spyware, malware or any other unwanted programs. The tool creates a report or log file with the results of the scan.
To download and run HijackThis, please follow the steps below:
  1. Download the Trend Micro HijackThis tool. Do the following:
    1. Click Saveon the File Download window.
    2. Select Desktop as the location, then click Save.
  2. Double-click the HijackThis.exe file to run the program.
  3. Read the License Agreement, then click I Accept.
    The Trend Micro HijackThis window will appear.
  4. Click Do a system scan and save a logfile.
    The hijackthis.log text file will appear on your desktop.
  5. Do any of the following:
  • Check the files on the log and research if they are malicious or not
  • Attach the log as a reply to the engineer who is handling it if you have an existing case
  • Post your log in the Trend Community for analysis
