What are the different types of scans and how do I run them?
There are two main types of scans used by your Trend Micro program: the real-time scan and the manual scan.
Real-Time Scans
The real-time scan runs constantly in the background and automatically starts when you start up your system.
You can tell whether the real-time scan is running because you will see the Trend Micro logo in the system tray on your taskbar (beside your computer’s clock).

If you do not see the icon in your system tray, you can find more detailed instructions on how to check whether your real-time scan is running by referring to solution EN-1054798.

Manual Scans
Manual scans are triggered by clicking the Scan Now button on your Trend Micro program’s main console.

There are three types of manual scans you can run: the quick scan, the full system scan, and the custom scan.

How long does the scan normally take to complete?
Scanning time depends on the type of scan being run.
The full system scan is the most thorough since it scans all the files and folders on your computer, so it may take a while, depending on how many files are on your computer and how big they are.
The quick scan, which is only available for 2009 and 2010 versions, does an instant check on your drive. It only checks for locations in which security threats are likely to hide, so it takes less time than the full scan.
With the custom scan, you can choose which files and folders you wish to scan, so the length of time it takes to complete depends on how large an amount of data you have chosen to scan.

When should I run a full system scan?

To learn how to run a full system scan, refer to solution EN-1054240.

What should I do after the manual scan has finished?
After running a manual scan, the scan progress window will automatically close as long as no threats were detected. If threats were detected during the scan, you will see a summary window identifying these and their statuses.

Your Trend Micro program automatically resolves threats it finds. However, if there are security threats your program is unable to fix, clean, quarantine, or delete, remove these manually using the TwinFix Tool by following the steps in solution EN-1054793.

How do I pause, stop, or minimize the scan in progress, and how do I resume it?
Once you start running your scan, a progress window will appear. To stop or pause the scan or to minimize the window, click on the appropriate buttons at the bottom of the window.

Note: Clicking Continue in the background will remove the window from view, but the program will continue to scan your computer. To view the window and see the progress of your scan after minimizing it, double-click on the Trend Micro icon in your system tray, beside your computer’s clock.

How do I set scheduled scans, and will these run even when my computer is turned off, on hibernate, or not logged on to a user account?
You can set a scheduled scan to run at a specified date, time, or frequency.
For instructions on how to schedule scans, refer to solution EN-1054782.

How can I resolve issues or errors I encounter while scanning?
Errors and other issues encountered during a scan can occur for a number of reasons, and can be resolved in varying ways as well.
For more information on scanning issues and instructions on how to resolve them, refer to solution EN-1036165.

What should I do if the scanning gets stuck on a specific file and does not move?
Scanning a large file may take some time, so some lag is normal. If the program does not move on to scan the next file in about an hour, however, follow the instructions in solution EN-1036165.
