Problem Description

The following error message appears on some machines:

Error: CNTAOSMGR.exe - Application Error ------ The instruction at "0x0041B942" Referenced memory at "0x00181000". The memory could not be "read"

This issue occurs even after uninstalling and reinstalling the OfficeScan client.

Solution

Sometimes application-specific Performance Monitor counters may stop working after you install an application and can corrupt the performance counter strings.

When you install an application that includes Performance Monitor counters, Windows backs up the copy of the Registry entries related to the Performance Monitor in the PerfStringBackup.ini file. Windows creates this backup so that the Performance Monitor-related Registry entries can be saved if the set up of the new application fails.

To resolve this issue, please perform the following:

1.

Restore the PerfStringBackup.ini file from a backup that was made prior to installing the new application.

2.

Run the following command to update the Registry to reflect the contents of the restored file.

"Lodctr /r:PerfStringBackup.ini"

Should the issue continue to occur, do the following:
1.  Download and run the CDT tool.
2.  Collect the CDT logs and send them to Trend Micro Technical Support for further analysis and
     escalation.
