Creating and restoring the Windows system registry backup

Problem:

When troubleshooting Trend Micro antivirus products and solutions, there are cases when the Windows system registry needs to be updated or edited.

As a precautionary measure, we recommend creating a backup and knowing how to restore a damaged or corrupted registry before making any changes.

  1. Creating a Windows registry back up:
    1. Open the Windows Registry Editor.
      1. Click Start > Run on the Windows desktop.
      2. Type regedit in the Open field.
      3. Press Enter or click OK.
    The Windows Registry Editor appears.
    1. Go to the menu bar and click Registry > Export.
    2. Select the directory where the registry backup will be stored (e.g. \temp folder).
    3. Enter a file name for the registry backup (e.g. regback1).
    4. Check and make sure that the All radio button under Export Range is selected.
    5. Click Save.
    6. Verify if the backup was created in the specified location in Step 5.
  2. Restoring the Windows registry backup:
    1. Open the Windows Registry Editor.
      1. Click Start > Run on the Windows desktop.
      2. Type regedit in the Open field.
      3. Press Enter or click OK.
    The Windows Registry Editor appears.
    1. In the menu bar, click Registry > Import.
    2. Select the directory where the registry backup will be imported (e.g. \temp\regback1.reg).
    3. Click Open.
    4. Restart Windows to begin using the restored registry.
